Microneedling
with a DermaPen

Striking skin lesions on the face, such as discomforting wrinkles that have heralded the skin aging process, can be annoying for both men and women. However, different treatment offers can successfully combat the development and temporarily shift it into the future. A gentle revolution among the anti-aging methods is Microneedling, as it hardly strains the skin, minimizes many common skin disorders and provides amazing results. This method is particularly effective for areas that are otherwise difficult to access and where there is no way to perform an operation such as surgery such as in the décolleté area or even to treat stretch marks.

Risks and complications of microneedling

Microneedling is an external application for the skin, which is performed with special devices such as the DermaPen and stimulates the so-called collagen synthesis. In the microneedling treatment, the DermaPen perforates the epidermis with a variety of sterile titanium needles, creating the finest channels and stimulating the natural revitalization and regeneration process. In the uppermost layer of the skin, tiny lesions that stimulate certain receptors in the skin, which are decisive for the formation of new collagen, thus occur. In this way, the increased collagen release can support the regeneration of the skin from the inside out and tighten the connective tissue.

With the aid of microneedling, hyaluronic acid, vitamins A, E and C or growth factors (PRP) can be applied to the skin in order to achieve an effectively stronger end result. The additional treatment with your own growth factors PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is also known as vampire lifting. The treatment is minimally invasive, so that it is gentle to the skin and unlike a laser treatment can be repeated often, as it is a non-ablative procedure: the skin does not become thinner!

Microneedling with DermaPen is a gentle procedure for improving the appearance of the skin. The DermaPen used is a medical pen, with an attachment of the finest titanium needles. It can make about 1300 small holes per second.

Depending on the area treated, the type of skin and the desired result, the depth of penetration (up to about 3 mm) and the intensity of the needles can be varied. The DermaPen is moved vertically, horizontally and diagonally in the area to be treated. The skin areas are perforated in the finest way. At this point, the immune system also sets in, as it begins to initiate healing of the "injured" areas by releasing collagen, elastin, and the body's own hyaluronic acid. The treatment can be either cosmetic or medical. The application affects the needle length and perforation depth used.

In a cosmetic treatment, the length is concentrated to about 0.5-1.5 mm. The resulting effect is a rejuvenation of the skin through the stimulation of the blood circulation, which ultimately leads to the improvement of the nutrient supply and thus to a more uniform skin appearance. The size of the pores is reduced. Pigment changes can also be reduced. For medical indication associated with scars by e.g. acne, surgery or burns, the needles are extended to 1.0-3.0 mm penetration depth and can positively affect the skin renewal and smooth the skin as well as reduce wrinkles.

It is important that the skin areas to be treated are (when possible) treated in advance and definitely afterwards for about 3-4 weeks with special serums and creams, which are specially tailored to your skin type. The aftercare is essential for a good result. The important protective function of the skin is not impaired by the micro-injuries, since the upper epidermis (stratum corneum) closes up again after a few minutes.

In microneedling with a DermaPen, the surfaces to be treated are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Then a special anesthetic cream is applied about half an hour before the medical needling. After a certain exposure time, the cream is removed again. After treatment, a hyaluronic mask is applied.

Depending on the intensity of the treatment only with a slight redness is expected, which may last 48 to 72 hours.

Microneedling is not only suitable for the face, neck area or the décolleté, but can be applied in all areas of the body with problematic skin and connective tissue zones. It serves to improve the surface of the skin (for example acne scars), to refine the pores and also to reduce wrinkles. In addition, the needle treatment reduces cellulite, reduces saggy tear ducts and droopy eyelids, softens stretch marks and helps to regenerate and tighten loose connective tissue. As part of a medical-cosmetic therapy, the method provides excellent services, for example, in the treatment of acne scars or pigment disorders.

Needling can also be used on thin hair. It stimulates the blood circulation and growth factors, which leads to a significant strengthening of the hair structure.

Therefore, patients with the above-mentioned difficulties are good candidates for this treatment. The minimally invasive procedure is gentle and can be repeated several times and contributes to visible success in the anti-aging field. Mainly it is useful for patients with wrinkled skin, large-pored skin, sagging skin or pitted skin. Since no skin layers are destroyed or eroded and the sterile needles of DermaPens penetrate only a few millimeters into the skin, there are no risks. The skin recovers and regenerates by itself.

The procedure should not be used if the patient suffers from acute acne inflammation, other infectious or inflammatory skin diseases or skin cancer. Also, it must not be used in acute herpes infections. All risks must be discussed in advance with the treating plastic and cosmetic surgeon.

The treatment with a DermaPen is much better targeted than other applicators because the needle length can be adjusted depending on the area to be treated.

Another great advantage is that a DermaPen sets the perforations perpendicular to the skin plane and thus significantly more openings are initiated during the microneedling than a derma-roller, which can tear skin through its rotational perforation. This makes treatment with a DermaPen more effective and much less painful than with a standard derma-roller.

Due to the high speed of the electronically controlled DermaPen, the punctures are less noticeable than with a standard derma-roller.

In the cosmetic field, a single treatment is often enough to give good results, while the medical microneedling recommends three sessions every six weeks.

Microneedling perforates the epidermis. Minor injuries associated with minor bleeding close after about five minutes.

Careful post-treatment with special serums and creams avoids wound infections and stimulates and accelerates healing processes. The duration of swelling and redness of the treated area depends on the type of microneedling and the skin sensitivity.

Permanent sensory disturbances, severe pain or healing disorders are not to be expected.
