Narrowing of the nose

A particularly wide or large nose often leads to a reduction in self-esteem and shame and creates discomfort in public. Sufferers perceive their nose as an inharmonious body part that is visible and cannot be obscured. For such individuals, a narrowing of the nose is an attractive solution.

Benefits of nasal narrowing

▪ Relatively safe intervention
▪ Generates a harmonious overall

Nasal narrowing refers to surgery in the area of nose surgery (rhinoplasty) with the aim of optically narrowing the nose. The nose is adapted to the natural proportions of the patient's face, as well as to the patient’s wishes.

The treatment may be realized separately or together with another rhinoplasty in the context of a major procedure, such as nasal tip correction. In this case, soft tissue and cartilage tissue are removed, in some cases, cartilage grafts can be used. As part of a nose tip correction, the tip of the nose can be changed and re-modeled so that it integrates harmoniously into the overall picture of the face. The entire rhinoplasty is a challenging but efficient procedure.

The extent to which the nose can be narrowed varies from patient to patient. The skin texture, bone density and the proportions of the entire face play a decisive role.

The procedure for narrowing the nose depends on the individual expression of the nose of the patient. It always depends on which part of the nose is responsible for the increased width or size of the nose.

Range of application

• Broad nose
• Bulbous nose
• Humped nose
• Large nostil flares
• Large nostrils

The isolated narrowing of the nose is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes one hour to complete. One differentiates between the open and the closed surgical technique. Which of the two procedures is used in the operation, the plastic and cosmetic surgeon decides individually from patient to patient. In the closed technique, the surgeon gets access to the inside of the nose through the nostrils. So no cuts are needed from the outside. The open technique is characterized by concealed incision from the outside of the bridge of the nose and in the inside of the nose in order to be able to penetrate into the interior. As a rule, the open surgical technique is used to narrow the nose.

At the beginning of the procedure, the surgeon places a thin incision in the area of the bridge of the nose, thus opening access to the tissue and internal structure of the bridge of the nose. Throughout the process, special devices are used that have been designed for use only in the area of the nose. It is very important that the sensitive mucous membranes are not damaged during treatment. All soft tissue overlying the nasal bone is then exposed and any excess removed. If the bone structure is responsible for the disproportionately large nose, the bony parts are fractured and repositioned or carefully removed.

If the nasal entrance is to be narrowed, the plastic and cosmetic surgeon now makes a small incision on the underside of the nasal flare and removes a wedge-shaped piece of tissue.

At the end of the procedure, all incisions are sutured and, if necessary, absorbent ‘tampons’ are inserted. The bridge of the nose and the nostrils are shaped with special patches. The surgeon usually applies a nasal plaster cast over the patches in order to best protect the nose during the healing phase.

Size and shape of the nose significantly influence the effect and expressiveness of the face. A large or wide nose is usually perceived as unaesthetic. They often cause a sense of shame and discomfort in those affected. Those affected can suffer from malicious comments from others. Especially bulbous noses and broad noses can be corrected by a narrowing procedure.

There are no special criteria that exclude a patient for the procedure. It must be noted, however, that the narrowing can only be carried out from the age of 18 years. In addition, the procedure cannot be performed if patients suffer from inflamed mucous membranes, nasal diseases or certain allergies. Whether this is the case is clarified in preliminary discussions and preliminary examinations with the plastic and cosmetic surgeon.

Another advantage is that the methods for narrowing the nose can be customized. It is decided together with the patient how the new form can be realized and optimized.

If the treatment is performed by an experienced rhinoplasty specialist, complications are very rare. It is quite normal to experience disturbed facial sensation in the first four weeks after treatment. In addition, usually slight swelling and hematomas in the facial area occur.

As already mentioned several times, narrowing of the nose is a technically demanding and complex operation.

It is strongly recommended that first and foremost importance be attached to the quality of the treatment when choosing the appropriate surgeon. Only a trained specialist with sufficient experience and expertise in the field of rhinoplasty and especially the narrowing of the nose, can help you to achieve the optical result you desire.

Only when a surgeon takes enough time to explain the background, risks and course of the operation can you be sure that the result will meet your expectations and wishes.

It is very difficult to determine a flat rate for rhinoplasty, because the costs incurred are composed of various factors and are particularly dependent on the extent of the intervention.
